Week 38, Day 5 — Isaiah 56-57
Series: 2024 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
When considering the deplorable spiritual and moral conditions of Israel and Judah in Isaiah’s time, we are compelled to ask, How? After all the Lord had done for these people, from the Abrahamic promises of Genesis 12 onward, how could they treat Him so irreverently and rebelliously? As author John C. Maxwell has famously said, “Everything rises and falls on leadership.” In the cases of Israel and Judah, look at what is said of their leaders, and you will begin to understand the populace. Isaiah 56.9-12 described those leaders as visionless, ignorant, mute, lazy, gluttonous, foolish, selfish, drunk, and delusional. When we observe decline or failure around us, let’s remember to first examine our own influence upon others.
