Week 42, Day 3 — Jeremiah 19-20

Series: 2024 Bible Reading

And now, a minute with the word…

For speaking the truth from God, Jeremiah was a hated man. Pashhur the priest took issue with what Jeremiah had said in the Ben Hinnom Valley to the elders and some of the leading priests. Jeremiah was beaten and then placed in the stocks, in an effort to get him to be silent and also publicly humiliate him. Those who practice evil and don’t care what God has to say will hate those who speak the truth. Jesus told His disciples in John 15 the same thing:

John 15.18-21 — “If the world hates you, understand that it hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own. However, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of it, the world hates you. Remember the word I spoke to you: A servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. But they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they don’t know the one who sent me.” (CSB)

Let us not despair when we are treated poorly for the sake of the Gospel. Let us draw courage and strength from the example of Jeremiah who continued speaking what God told him to speak in the face of immense opposition.
