Week 42, Day 5 — A minute with the Word
Series: 2024 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the word…
Jeremiah 35.13-14 — “This is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says: Go, say to the men of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem, ‘Will you not accept discipline by listening to my words? — this is the Lord’s declaration. The words of Jonadab, son of Rechab, have been carried out. He commanded his descendants not to drink wine, and they have not drunk wine to this day because they have obeyed their ancestor’s command. But I have spoken to you time and time again, and you have not obeyed me!” (CSB)
God pointed the people of Judah to the Rechabites as an example of obedience. The Rechabites had followed a command of one of their ancestors for hundreds of years. God had sent many prophets to His people in an effort to turn the hearts of the people back towards Him. They had ignored those prophets and those pleas time and time again. While we don’t have prophets coming to us today, we do have the written word of God continually speaking to us today as we engage with it. Through the pages of our Bibles, God is imploring us to be reconciled to Him and to be more like Him. When I read the words of God, how do I respond? Do I respond in humility, or do I willfully ignore things that challenge me?
Hebrews 12.11 — “No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” (CSB)
