Week 44, Day 2 — Obadiah; Jeremiah 40-42
Series: 2024 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
The heart of the people of Edom was proud. They were convinced that they were so defended from opposition due to the landscape of where they lived that no one would be able to overtake them.
Obadiah 1.3 — “The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rock, in your lofty dwelling, who say in your heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?’” (ESV)
God was going to bring them down from their lofty perch (v4) and He would do so for the things listed in verses 10-14. What’s the lesson for me from Obadiah? Here are two things I should consider.
- The day of the Lord will come for all, no matter how protected/sheltered I think I might be. I will appear before the judgment seat of Christ one day and receive what is due for my actions here on this earth (2 Corinthians 5.10). I need to make sure that my life is right with God and I am living a life pleasing to Him before that day comes.
- I should not place my trust in any earthly nation or people — my trust should be placed in the Lord. God is the sovereign King over all creation. He created the universe with His words and He upholds the universe by His power (Hebrews 1.3). No matter how secure I think my home country is, I should always place my hope and my confidence in God (Psalm 28.7).
