Week 44, Day 3 — Jeremiah 43, 44, 46

Series: 2024 Bible Reading

And now, a minute with the Word…

The people of Judah did not heed the words of God and remain in the land of Judah after the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC. Things were so bad in Jerusalem that they believed they would find relief in the land of Egypt. They are even convinced that their suffering is a direct result of their cessation of sacrifices to the queen of heaven, a reference most likely to the ancient Mesopotamian goddess of fertility, Ishtar (Jeremiah 44.15-19). They were so hardened and calloused to their sin, that they refused to acknowledge they had sinned against God.

When our lives feel as if they are spiraling out of control, do we look inward to ourselves to see if there is some sin that we need to acknowledge and repent of? Or do we say to ourselves, ‘That’s not it’, and continue even more down the path that we are going; convinced in our minds that we have done nothing wrong? Let us always have a heart that seeks to keep ourselves in fellowship with God and walking in His light.

2 Corinthians 13.5 — “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? — unless indeed you fail to meet the test!” (ESV)
