Israel’s idolatrous and rebellious history — from Egypt, through the wilderness, and until the time of their captivity — is recounted in Ezekiel 20, and two lessons should be learned from that history. First, regarding God’s longsuffering — “The Lord…is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” (2 Peter 3.9). Second, regarding parental responsibility — “Train up a child in the way he should go” (Proverbs 22.6), because Israel suffered in the days of Ezekiel for a generational failure of spiritual leadership.
