When mistreated by evildoers for doing right, I might be tempted (in the words of a bygone era) to lose my Christianity, i.e. to abandon righteousness for self-preservation; but Hebrews 10.35-36a reminds me, “do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance.” Though abused and parched “like a wineskin in the smoke” (Psalm 119.83), though “The insolent have dug pitfalls for me” (verse 85), though “they persecute me with falsehood” (verse 86), and though “They have almost made an end of me on earth” (verse 87), “yet I have not forgotten your statutes” (verse 83) and “I have not forsaken your precepts” (verse 87). “I appeal to you, brothers, bear with my word of exhortation” (Hebrews 13.22).
